Compass Writers’ had its first meeting in May 2007. The group is open to all writers – poets, novelists, short story writers, screenwriters etc., and welcomes non-writers who are interested in the art of writing. The group is there to provide support and links up those who want to meet others who are working in the field. It is open to people aged 18 years and over.
The typical format of a meeting includes the opportunity to share and discuss issues of mutual interest. News on forthcoming courses, competitions, festivals and other events are shared. Members are encouraged to share ideas and experiences. Tips are given along with advice on useful resources. Identifying outlets for work is encouraged.
Members may read a work of their own or generated from one of the topics selected at a previous meeting. They can choose to read their work without comment from others or invite comment. Any comments made by others must be constructive. The idea is to identify the strengths apparent in the writer’s work followed by a few suggestions for improvement if necessary.
In-house exercises are undertaken from time to time.
Those who want something to work on between meetings are given topics to address.
The group meets on a fortnightly basis for about two hours each time in a room in the Edmund Rice Heritage Centre, Barrack’s Street, Waterford.
Meetings take place from September through June the following year.
